George M. Matthews, a well known and life-long citizen of Leesburg, Cumberland county, died at his home on Thursday morning, June 30, after an illness of one year, death being due to a complication of diseases.

Mr. Matthews was born in the village of Leesburg in the year 1851, and at the age of 16 took over the blacksmithing business of his father Robert Matthews, and conducted this business for a period of 53 years. One year ago he was forced to relinquish active business owing to ill health. The business was then taken over by his son Geo. L. Matthews, who conducted it until April 1 of this year.

Thus has ended one of the oldest blacksmithing stands in Cumberland county; the same having been run continuously in the Matthews name for 80 years.

He was a member of Rehoboth M. E. Church, Washington Camp P. O. S. of A. No. 674 of Shippensburg, Walnut Bottom Council No. 864, O. of I. A. and Evangeline Council No. 179, S. and D. of L. of Leesburg.

Surviving him are three sons: Robert E. of Middletown, Pa., Geo. L. of Walnut Bottom, and Francis E. at home. Also one sister Mrs. Josephine L. McGrail of Leesburg.

Funeral services were held from his late home Saturday morning, July 2, at 10 o'clock, Rev. Ralph Miller, pastor of Rehoboth M. E. Church, officiating, assisted by Rev. Hoffman of Leesburg. Interment was made in Spring Hill cemetery.
