Harold Slane was born near Dunlap, Peoria County, Illinois while his father Ben was operating a candy store in Dunlap. He grew up in and around Princeville in Peoria County and attended high school in Princeville. He married Opal Hartman in Peoria, IL on January 14, 1934 and they had 3 sons. The family lived in several locations in Peoria and Peoria Heights through at least 1937 or 1938 while Harold was working for the State of Illinois, Caterpillar and Hysters. In about 1952, the family left the farm and moved to Monica in Peoria County until after all 3 sons had left home. Harold and Opal were living in Princeville when Harold died in 1976. Opal continued living at the same location until she moved to Deland, Florida a few years later and remarried. She moved to a nursing home near Columbus, Indiana in 1998 where she died in 2002.
