Obituary for John Brown:
January 2, 1894
"Another one of the pioneers of Lane county and the state of Oregon has passed away. Last evening, at 9:15 o'clock, John Brown died as his residence in this city, of paralysis and the la grippe, aged 83 years and 6 days. Uncle Johnny Brown, as he was familiarly called by all, was born in Tennessee, December 26, 1810; was married to Mary Graham in Missouri, in the year 1835; came to Oregon in 1852 settling on a farm near Irving; moved to Eugene in 1870, where he has since continuously resided. Six children are left to mourn his death: Thomas Brown of Eugene, John Brown of Pendleton,Mrs. Sarah J. Beal of Pendleton, Jackson Brown of Creswell***, and Mrs. Mary M. Bucknell of Iowa, besides many relatives and friends. His wife died on Christmas day four years ago, while one of his sons, Benjamin, died on New Years day, 1858. Mr. Brown united with the old school Baptist Church in 1869, and was a consistent member of the same until his death. He received a severe fall the 6th day of last July, and since that time had been confined to his bed in a helpless condition. John Brown was respected by every one who knew him as he was an honest, kind, charitable citizen. When such a man dies the people mourn his loss.
The funeral will take place from his late residence, corner Eighth and Lincoln streets, Wednesday morning, Jan. 8 at 11 o'clock, to the Mulkey cemetary. Friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend."

*** NOTE: John Brown did not have a child named Jackson Brown. This should have read "Mrs. Berrilla Brown Jackson" of Creswell.
