Death: 1993

Oscar was born to William Batten and Margaret (Ramer) Batten in 1923 and worked as a farmer while young. In January of 1944 he went to war as a Gunnar's Mate for the US Navy. He served aboard the USS Bryant and the USS George gaining a Purple Heart (and a steel plate to replace the top of his skull) and was discharged honorably just in time for Christmas 1945. He later took his wife - Lawanda Josephine (Wyse) Batten - and children to Pittsburg, California for a job at the steel mill. I remember my grandfather as a wonderfully funny man who was never to busy to play with my sister and I.

He was cremated, and his ashes scattered at sea.
