Rev. Chappell was a Methodist-Episcopal minister. He was also a Mason and was given a Masonic burial. He had an accident and had to retire from the ministry and afterwards he worked for the U.S. Postal Service as the Post Master in Powderly, AL. He married Mary Lou Crawford on February 14, 1886 at Talladega County, AL. Mary Lou's father was the minister who married them. His parents were William M.Chappell and Mary Ann Norred.

At the age of 15, Rev. Andrew Jackson Chappell was happily converted and joined the Church under the preaching of Rev. T.W. Hayes. August 28th, 1887, he was licensed to preach by Dr. Anson West, Presiding Elder at Sardis Church, Chandler Springs Circuit. November 1887, at Tuscaloosa, he was admitted on trial into the North Alabama Conference and was ordained Deacon by Bishop W.W. Duncan at Huntsville, November 20, 1889; He was made an Elder by Bishop Charles B. Galloway at Decatur, December 7, 1891.

Chandler Springs, Graham, Mt. Tabor, Fernbank, Fayette, Cloverdale, Pleasant Site, Waynesville, Langston, Hokes Bluff, Bessemer, Summerville, Austinville, Ninth, Decatur, Adger-Searls.
