My maternal grandmother~~~~
This is my Mom's mother, and the grandma we never knew. My Mom was just 3 when her mother died.
My grandmother died during childbirth at her home, along with her newborn daughter. This would have been her 4th child. Mother and child were buried together, the baby cradled in her mother's arms.
A local lady, who is now nearly 90, sang at this funeral when she was just 7 years old. She told us that it haunts her to this day because she peered into the casket and saw mother and child together.
The visitation for Nellie Perrine and her baby daughter was held in the family home. Our mother told us that she was lifted up to look inside the casket at her mother and sister. She said after she saw them, she ran and hid in the closet. That was her last memory of her mother. A sad story. I wish could have known my grandmother. She probably would have made a huge difference in our lives.
Nellie Evaline Perrine was born at Wing, Illinois November 4, 1891, and departed this life April 2, 1927 aged 35 years, four months and 28 days. Her girlhood days were spent on the farm and attending Bell Top school.
She was married to Walter Baehler December 14, 1916. To this union were born four children, three of whom, Thelma Elizabeth, aged 9, Gerald Thomas, aged 7, and Laura Mae, aged 3, with the sorrowing husband are left to mourn her untimely death. The infant daughter was laid to rest with its mother. She is also survived by her mother, father and one brother Harry Earl.
At the age of 14 she was converted in revival meetings conducted by Rev. Walter North, and joined the Methodist Church at Wing under the pastorship of Rev. Pruin. She was a worker in the Community Circle and Missionary Society of the church and a member of the Pleasant Ridge Household Science Club.
She was a devoted mother, a faithful wife, a loving daughter, and a friend to all who met her in her daily rounds of life.
Funeral services were held from the home Monday afternoon. April 4, conducted by her former pastor, Rev. Benjamin of Onarga, assisted by the Rev. Penticoff.
Those attending from a distance were Alfred Baehler, son Fred, and daughter Bertha of Convoy, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Follmer of Pontiac; Mrs. Cora Thompson, and Miss Belle Barrett of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Tolladay and son and Miss Amanda Tolladay of Decatur; Mrs.Edward Webster and Mrs Ida Albin, of Fisher, Ill.; and Mr. and Mrs. Edward French of Downs, Illinois.
The many floral offerings were beautiful, expressing the sympathy of her many friends.
