Charles F. Beck, Former Councilman, Passes Away
Served Three Terms on Common Council and Was Chairman of Fire Committee When Central Fire Station Was Built - Spanish War Veteran, Was Member of State Soldiers' Hospital Board.
Charles F. Beck, former councilman, Spanish War Veteran and active in the civic and fraternal affairs of the city, died at the Stamford Hospital yesterday. He was 53[sic,52] years old. Mr. Beck was employed at the Yale and Towne for 29 years, entering the plant on May 7, 1901. He was assistant superintendent of the finishing department there at the time of his death.
He was born in Rome, N.Y., Feb. 8, 1877 [sic, 1878], the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James A. Beck. During the Spanish War, Mr. Beck was a member of Company G, 203d New York Volunteer Infantry. He was a member and a past commander of Frederick A. Hill Camp, No. 15, United Spanish War Veterans. He was also one of the organizers of the Central Veterans' Association and was active in its affairs.

Mr. Beck served in the Common Council three different terms during allof which time he was chairman of the Fire Committee. One of the many improvements brought about during his terms in that capacity was the erection of the Central Fire Station opposite St. John's Park. Mr. Beck was elected to the Common Council for the first time in 1913, from the First Ward. During his term at that time, in addition to being Fire Committee head, he was a member of the Health and Sewer Committee and of the Ordinance Committee. He served again in 1919-20, from the Third Ward. At this time, he was a member of the Sanitation Committee, the Lighting Committee, the Building Committee and the Police Committee, as well as chairman of the Fire Committee.
He returned to the Common Council again from the Third Ward for the term of 1921 to 1922, where he continued as Fire Committee head and was a member of the Police Committee and the Building Committee.
On State Hospital Board
The deceased was a member of the State Soldiers' Hospital Board from1921-1927.
Mr. Beck was a charter member and past exalted ruler of the local lodge of Elks and was a past president of the local lodge of Eagles. He was a charter member of the Charles Carroll of Carrollton Club anda member also of the Woodmen of the World and the Electro Platers Society.
Mr. Beck's wife died about two years ago. He leaves a daughter, Miss Gladys Beck; a sister, Mrs. Mayne Shipman of Clinton, N.Y.; and a brother, Edward Beck, of Rome, N.Y. Last evening, a delegation from the Charles Carroll of Carrollton Club visited the late home of Mr. Beck at 136 Bedford Street with the Rev.Charles A. Corcoran, assistant at St. John's R. C. Church and said prayers for the deceased.
Funeral Tuesday
The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 10 in St. John's R. C.Church, with interment in St. John's R. C. Cemetery, Springdale. Delegations from the following organizations will attend: Elks,Eagles, Spanish War Veterans, Woodmen of the World and Charles Carroll Club.
