Shirley Lee Johnson Bertucci, passed away on Tuesday August 4, 2009 at the age of 86.

Beloved wife of the late Dr. Emile Augustus Gerald Bertucci, Jr. Shirley was born January 3, 1923 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She attended McDonogh High School, and received degrees from Loyola and Tulane Universities.

She is preceded in death by her parents Roy Johnson and Ruth Moinet Johnson. She is the sister of Roy Johnson, the late Ruth Johnson Favret, and the late Eunice Johnson Bech. She is the mother of the late Cheryl Ann Bertucci, the late Ronald Stephen Bertucci, Dr. Gregory Emile Bertucci, Emile Augustus Gerald Bertucci III and wife Laura Lee LeBouef, Dr. Bryan Johnson Bertucci and wife Ruth Marjorie Frey, Michel F. Bertucci, Leonard Joseph Bertucci and wife Mary Francis Helm, Celeste Bertucci McShane, Dr. Philip Lee Bertucci and wife Carol Ann Ferguson, and Barbara Ann Bertucci.

Shirley Bertucci was Past President and Board Member of the New Orleans Opera Guild, Past President of the Louisiana Academy of Family Practice and was named "Wife of the Year" of the Louisiana Academy of Family Practice, Past President of the Louisiana State Medical Society Wives Club, founder and first President of De La Ronde Hospital Auxiliary, established the Doctor's Wives Club of St. Bernard Parish.

She was Past President of Green Thumb Garden Club of St. Bernard, Past Chairman of the United Way of St. Bernard.

Shirley was voted "One of "84 People to Watch in '84", "One of the Ten Best Dressed Women in New Orleans 1988", and one of the "Top Ten Volunteers in the New Orleans Area 1987" by the Institute for Humane Understanding.

Shirley was a National Hospital Accountant, Accredited Landscape Contractor and State Landscape Design Critic, Registered Louisiana Florist, Professional model for Mannequins.

Shirley holds a patent for a tennis racket handle she invented.

Shirley was an avid bridge player, and enjoyed painting, tennis, golf, hunting, jogging, and being a mother of 9, grandmother of 27, and great grandmother of 7. Shirley and Emile started a hospital in Lumberton, Miss., later a clinic in Poplarville, Miss.

After moving to Lutcher the clinic was donated becoming St. Joseph Catholic Church leading to the building of larger facility where Shirley and Emile were honored for their past donations.

They purchased St. Bernard General Hospital which they renovated and served as the only medical facility in St. Bernard for over 20 years.

Shirley and Emile later built De La Ronde Hospital which provided services for another 22 years until destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

Shirley became involved in numerous medical societies and services, garden clubs, and social service agencies. She loved to serve and never shied away from leadership positions. Her love of music led to her involvement in the opera and symphony. The beauty and peace of gardening lead her to attended numerous courses at LSU and join numerous garden clubs.

They retired to their summer retreat, Tidewater, in Kiln Mississippi until the death of Dr. Emile in 1999. Since that time she has remained at Tidewater sharing all the amenities nature has to provide including peacocks, ducks, chickens, and birds, and fishing in a lagoon they built after visiting Hawaii that is filled with water lilies, fish, and turtles. She enjoyed water aerobics in the pool until the very end. She taught all of her children and grandchildren the satisfaction of service to others - not by word but by example. Good job Maw Maw - congratulations on a job well done.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. (in Metairie Cemetery) on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. until funeral time. Interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery. Friends who wish to make a contribution may do so to Annunciation Catholic Church, 5370 Kiln DeLisle Rd., Kiln, MS 39556.
