Ivan Baker served in the US Army from 1942-1945 in the European Theater of Operations. 1LT Baker was a Communications Officer in the 335th Field Artillery Battalion, 87th Infantry Division, during the infamous Battle of the Bulge where he was awarded the Bronze Star.

Fenton-Ivan L. Baker, 92, a resident of Fenton, La. for the past 61 years, was called to his heavenly home Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at Villa Maria Retirement Center, Lake Charles, La.

Mr. Baker, a native of Vermillion Parish was born to Isaac L. Baker and Oleana McDaniel on July 20, 1913. He was a graduate of Baton Rouge High School and SLI (now ULL in Lafayette) where he lettered in track and field. He received an MS from LSU in Baton Rouge. He was a World War II veteran and a recipient of the Bronze Star. He served in the European Theatre as a 1st Lt. in the Field Artillery. Mr. Baker taught Vocational Agriculture at Fenton High School for 21 years and worked in the La. State Dept. of Education as Area Vocational-Agriculture Supervisor for 12 years. He led many young men to excellence in FFA including state and national honors. He retired in 1973 and spent his retirement fishing and traveling with his wife. He was a faithful member of Fenton Baptist Church and walked with his Savior through most his life

Mr. Baker is survived by his loving wife of more than 64 years, Irene Broussard Baker; two daughters, Brenda Baker Hoppe and husband Jimmy of Iowa, La. and Rebecca Baker Stein and husband Herb of New Orleans, La.; four grandchildren, Steven Hoppe and wife Jeannie of Ft. Worth, Caryl Hoppe of New Orleans, William Baker Steen and wife Amy of Houston and Richard Stein of New Orleans; four great grandchildren, Miranda, Nicole and Brandon Hoppe of Ft. Worth and Caitlin Stein of Houston.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 19, 2006 in Ardoin Funeral Home of Kinder. Rev. Don Willis will officiate. Burial and Veterans Honors will be at Pine Hill Cemetery in Iowa under the direction of Ardoin Funeral Home, Kinder, La. Visitation is from 5 p.m. 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 a.m. until time of service.

Pall bearers will be Wendell Marcantel, David Marcantel, Don Ladner, Ray Bebee, Byron Buller and Donny Greene.

Honorary pall bearers will be J. R. Langley, Evans Guillory, Jr., Brennon Meaux, Dale Branch, Benny Baker, Carl Langley, Roy Barker, Mac Baker and Bobby Watkins.

Memorial gifts may be given to Fenton Baptist Church, P.O. Box 370, Fenton, La. 70640.
