Funeral for Dr. Jerry Ray Burns, 70, of Decatur will be Monday, May 18, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home with Bro. Nathan Green, Bro. Lynn Harvel and Bro. Stephen Terry officiating.
Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.
Dr. Burns, who died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at Decatur General Hospital, was born Feb. 3, 1939, in Lauderdale County to Frank and Lillie Mae Butler Burns. He was pastor of Rural Grove Baptist Church for 19 years. He retired from Copeland Corp. in Hartselle. He had a doctorate degree in ministry from Bethany Bible College in Dothan. He received a degree of theology, bachelor's degree of ministry, master's degree of ministry and a doctor's degree of ministry in June 1994. He was Magna Cum Laude all through college. Dr. Burns attended Calvary Baptist Church where he received his Certificate of Ordination in 1971 and was assistant pastor for 21 years. He was dedicated to his family and the Lord, his church members and friends with all he had. His parents preceded him in death.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Carolyn Brown Burns; two sons, Anthony Burns and Jeff Burns, both of Decatur; one daughter, Maria Sandlin of Decatur; one daughter-in-law, Lori Burns of Decatur; one sister, Ann Skipworth and her husband, Joe, of Decatur; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Timmy Blackwood, Johnathan Newman, Calvin Burns, Terry Blackwood, Steven Harvel and Randy Long.
