Jack Davis, 89, a Mexia native currently residing in Tehuacana, passed away Wednesday night at the VA Hospital in Temple, Texas. Services will be held Friday, February 24, 2012, at 11 a.m. in the Porter Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dale McDaniel and Rev. Marc Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at the Tehuacana Cemetery. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, February 23, 2012, at the funeral home.
Jack was born to the late White Lawrence and Emma Kate Tucker Davis. He married Sarah Sanders Davis on September 20, 1942. Jack served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He returned to Mexia where he worked as a welder, auto mechanic, service station operator, and truck driver to support his wife, two daughters and three of his younger siblings. He was ordained as a deacon at Missionary Baptist Church of Mexia and most recently was a member of First Baptist Church of Tehuacana. Although he was devoted to his family, Jack was passionate about training horses and riding in horse shows. He was a charter member and past president of the Mexia Riding Club member of the Tri-County Horse Show Association and was instrumental in the original restoration of the Mexia Rodeo Arena. He and his daughters frequently rode in parades in Mexia and surrounding communities. His house is full of the many trophies and ribbons won by Jack and his daughter, Jeanie.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2008; son-in-law, Joe Williams; sisters, Aline and Elizabeth; brother, Lawrence Davis; parents-in-law, Mack Cleveland and Permelia Smith Sanders; brothers-in-law, John Mitchell, W.T. (Bill) Sanders and L.D. Williamson; sisters-in-law, Joyce and Lori Davis, Tence Sanders, and Ruby Williamson Clark; and nephews, Jamie Lynn Davis, David Mitchell, and Duane and Billie Joe Williamson.
He is survived by daughters, Jacqueline Casey and husband, Herb, Jeanie Williams, and Ronnie Welch; grandsons, Kevin Fitch and wife, Elke, of Teague, Bruce Fitch and wife, Ofelia, of Zeeland, Michigan and Michael Williams, of Mexia; great-grandsons, Jake Fitch, of Teague and Ty and Trent Williams, of Wortham; brothers, Joe Davis, and Wade Davis and wife, Elsie, of Mexia, Robert Davis and wife, Tera Ann, of Silsbee; sister, Mary Mitchell and husband, Norman Beyer, of Mexia; several nieces and nephews and many other family members and friends.
