Newspaper Obituary:
"Charlotte S. Bockius, Pioneer, Dies"
The Pajaro valley's thinning ranks of native pioneers was diminished even further when death came to Miss Charlotte S. Bockius...Miss Bockius was born in Watsonville 86 years ago, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Godfrey M. Bockius.... After Attending Watsonville schools, Miss Bockius attended the University of California and was one of the first girls to graduate from that institution, receiving her diploma in 1879. She was named a trustee of the Watsonville Public library in May 1900, and retired as secretary in July 1943. During all that time, she missed less than three meetings of the board. Her faithful work drew much praise.....Miss Bockius' parents came to Watsonville in 1853 from Pennsylvania (incorrect: NJ). Mr. Bockius was the first president of the Bank of Watsonville. He was born in Phila. and came to California for the gold rush (?) in 1852. After a time in San Francisco, he and his wife came to Watsonville. He was first in the meat business, then later in the real estate business, handling grain and fruit farms. He also was active in construction of homes and business buildings, including the Bank of Watsonville. He was an assembly representative, county judge, and town trustee, and Bockius Street here was named after him. Miss Bockius was one of four children....Three nieces survive Miss Bockius: Mrs. Priscilla Orr of San Diego; Miss Belle Fletcher, Watsonville and Mrs. Charlotte Wilson of San Jose...Burial will be in the Watsonville Pioneer Cemetery
