Sister M. Helene Coyle, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on March 2, at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.Born on August 4, 1923, in Susquehanna, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Helena McDevitt Coyle.
She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1942 and made her temporary profession of vows on August 2, 1944 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1947.
She served as a teacher at St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton from 1944 to 1952 and at St. Ephrem Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY, from 1952 to 1959. She was principal at St. Cecilia Elementary School in Exeter from 1960 to 1963. She also served as principal at schools in Washington, NC; Binghamton, East Rockaway, and Syracuse, NY; and Bethesda, MD. She served the IHM Congregation as Southern Sector Superior from 1978 to 1986. From 1990 to 2001 she was the office manager for training and rehabilitation of the Adult Day Care Program at St. Joseph's Center in Scranton. From 2001 to 2004 she was a volunteer at St. Joseph's Center. From 2004 until the time of her death she was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent and Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton. She received a bachelor of arts degree in education from Marywood College and a master of arts degree in education from Villanova University.
She was preceded in death by two sisters; Lucille and Mary. Surviving are cousins, Sister Lillian Marie Farrell, IHM, of Scranton, and Peggy Coyle of Binghamton, NY.
The funeral will be Tuesday, March 7 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the IHM Center, 2300 Adams Avenue in Scranton followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the IHM Center on Monday, March 6, between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
