Sister M. Therese Culhane, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on July 27 at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.

Born on July 31, 1922, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Thomas A. and Martha McMunn Culhane. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1941 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1944 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1947.

She served as a teacher at Mount Carmel Elementary School in Altoona from 1944 to 1947; St. Mary of Mount Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore from 1947 to 1952; St. Ambrose Elementary School in Bridgeport, Connecticut, from 1952 to 1958; St. Matthew Elementary School in East Stroudsburg from 1958 to 1959; Little Flower Elementary School in Bethesda, Maryland, from 1965 to 1970; St. Stephen Elementary School in New York, New York, from 1974 to 1978; Monsignor McHugh Elementary School in Cresco from 1978 to 1983; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Binghamton, New York, from 1983 to 1988.

She was principal at St. Henry Elementary School in Gresham, Oregon from 1959 to 1965 and at St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Bellefonte from 1970 to 1974. She served as a pastoral minister at Holy Rosary Indian Mission in Philadelphia, Mississippi, from 1988 to 1994.

She was an instructor at the Educational Enrichment Institute in Carbondale from 1994 to 1996. She served as sacristan at the Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale from 1996 to 2002. From 2002 until the time of her death, she served as prayer minister at the Marian Convent and Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.

She received a bachelor degree in English and a master degree in education both from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Munley, Martha, and Elizabeth McDermott; and two brothers, Rev. Thomas, CSC, and Francis.Surviving is a sister, Sister Marthine, IHM, of Scranton; nieces and nephews including: Mary Borthwich, Mike McDermott, Alice Marie Chrystal and Patrick McDermott.

The funeral will be Tuesday, August 1 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Peace Residence, 2300 Adams Avenue in Scranton followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at Our Lady of Peace Residence on Monday, July 31, between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
