Veda Ann Burroughs is child #7 of 9 born to Carrie Eva Faires and George Washington Burroughs. Family lived in Attica, Sedgwich Co, KS. They moved to Albuquerque, Bernalillo Co., NM area in mid-1900's. Mr. Burroughs was a section crew foreman for the AT&SF Railway.
As the train section would move down the line for the railroad so would the box cars where the section workers lived. Bill Brandt and brother, Lew, (workers for the railway) would visit the Burroughs house often. In 1920, Veda was now living in Thoreau, McKinley Co., NM where she meets the Homer Jones family. They asked her to live with them to help with the care for three Jones children and attend school (one being Maxine Jones). Four more children were born. Veda was a mid-wife/nanny even as a teenager.
Over the years, Veda and Bill marry then move to Winslow, Navajo Co., AZ. Maxine Jones has married Willis Hardin, a AT&SF Railway employee, moving in 1946 next door to the Brandt's. Small world! Veda became a 'second mother' to Elyse Hardin. Elyse would spend hours at their home. Veda was a great teacher, mentor, sweet lady, wonderful cook, great seamstress (making 'squaw dresses' for the Hardin girls), fantastic needlework projects, and a friend always ready to help others. She loved to fish, attend the Gallup Indian Ceremonials, entertain out-of-state nieces and nephews during the summer break from school.
Veda was baptized Nov. 16, 1959. She attended the St. Joseph's Church. She was a very active member of Winslow's Ladies Auxiliary, Nurses Assistant for Winslow Memorial Hospital (helping with delivery of two of Elyse's children), and pie maker for the priest.
So many wonderful memories of a very special person!!!
