John Hammonds is the son of John Hammonds and Wealthy Robinson. He married Margaret Wilson on October 25, 1810 in Adair County, Kentucky. John and Margaret had 14 children: Thomas; Nancy; Wealthy Ann; Sarah/Sally; Elizabeth Ann; Josiah Wilson; Mary Ann/Polly; Margaret/Peggy; William Coger; Jane; Martha/Posy; Eliza Ann; Morgan Slade; and John Wilson.
John Hammonds was referred to as Squire John because of his extensive land holdings and wealth and to differentiate him from other John Hammonds. In his will written on January 5, 1848, he provides for his wife Margaret, three slaves, and most of his children.
John and Margaret, as well as other family members, are buried on a knob in the field above their old home. It is a small private cemetery that is only about 50 feet by 50 feet. The Hammonds Cemetery is on land currently owned by Bruce A. Pierce.
