Lloyd Francis Gallagher, 80, a retired Washington area printer and a decorated combat veteran of World War II, died of lung cancer June 3 at his home in Owings, Md.
Mr. Gallagher, a Pennsylvania native, settled in the Washington area after the war. He worked for the Government Printing Office from 1949 to 1955, then spent about five years with Judd & Detweiler printing in the District. He then worked for McCardles printing in Silver Spring from about 1960 to 1970, then spent a decade with Cornelius Printing, also in Silver Spring, before retiring about 1980.
During World War II, he served in the Marine Corps, where he received expert ratings in rifle, pistol and auto-rifle and attained the rank of gunnery sergeant. He was a member of the 1st Marine division and saw ground combat action in the Pacific, including the fight for Okinawa. He received the Purple Heart medal for wounds he received in Okinawa and three battle stars.
He was a member of the American Legion.
His marriage to Virginia Ott Gallagher ended in divorce.
Survivors include four children, Judith Anne Perkins of Wheaton, Kathleen Marie Kolpack of Pennsylvania and Stephen F. and Timothy P. Gallagher, both of New Market, MD.; two sisters, Thora Shall and Martha Culley, both of Pennsylvania; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
