MARK TAFT BURNETT

Mark Taft Burnett, age 18 of 127 Thompson Rd. Chesnee S.C. died Sunday, Dec.18 1988, in a vehicle accident. Mark was born at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mark was a Chesnee High School Senior, also a member of Chesnee First Baptist Church, where he sang in the church choir. Mark was President of his Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Masters Singers of Chesnee.

Visitation was held Tuesday at Forest Lawn Mortuary in Chesnee, Services Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Chesnee, and were conducted by Dr. Troy Gregg.

Graveside services were at the Rebels Creek Cemetery, Rural community of Bakersville, Mitchell Co. N.C.

Mark was born, Thursday, 09-17-1970, in Spartanburg, SC. Dr. Lyles, Mark's Pediatrician, made an excellent diagnosis of his condition. He was born with a congential heart defect known as Transposition of the Great Vessels. Mark was not expected to live after birth. Dr Lyles said, "if he lives until Monday morning, the 21st of Sept., he would be transport by ambulance to South Carolina Medical University in Charleston,SC.

Through much prayer, the Good Lord performed a miracle. We were very fortunate to have as his Doctor. Dr. Arno Hohn, the department head, of Pediatric Cardiology, and his staff at the Children's Hospital, Medical University of Charleston,SC. Mark had three major surgeries over a three year period. His surgery and remarkable recovery made medical history in South Carolina. Up to this point there were only two hospitals on the east coast of the United States capable of doing this surgery. They were located at Tampa, FL and Pittsburg, PA. Following Mark's surgery 49 babies had this surgery. Tragically 25 babies died, 12 babies had pace maker inplants, and only 11 other babies were reported with a 100% success.

Mark was the first patient with this heart surgery in South Carolina. The Medical University had assigned a medical team to observe his post surgery progress for six weeks. On the third day after surgery, Mark was in the play room riding the Rocky, Rocky Wonder Horse. In one week we were leaving Charleston, headed for home. We experienced his first smile, since birth, as we drove by the big Coca Cola clock sign located on the right side of Interstate I-26. The sign is located at the first left turning curve leaving Charleston. We would often ask Mark for his Million Dollar smile, as a reminder of the miracle the Good Lord performed with Mark.

Nell and I appreciate, and acknowledge the efforts, and personal sacrifices made at the University of South Carolina Charleston medical team which was led by Dr. Arno Hohn.

We praised "THE GOOD LORD", as we left Charleston, giving him all the glory for the successful conclusion to this chapter in Marks young life.

Mark Taft Burnett accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at 8 years of age. He joined me as a member of the Chesnee First Baptist Choir at 16 yrs old. When not in school, Mark hung out with me most of the time. We worked on projects around the house, or building a fence on the family farm at Little Switzerland, NC. Mark traveled with me most of the 17 years with the Master's Singers Quartet. He loved to help set up, and tear down the sound equipment. No question about it, Mark's life was an encouragement and was instrumental in my commitment to the calling as a Deacon at the church, and the continued singing of Gospel Music.

One thing that stands out for me in the years, I knew my son Mark. Through his teen years he never acted like he was ashamed of hanging around his family. He considered us his very best friends, in my opinion, that is rare for a teenager. He would rather hang out with me than his class mates. I would meet him at school in the evenings. He would come in a dead run to the vehicle, so glad to see me. I really miss that closeness.

I can say we shared the same the closeness with our Daughter Lisa Marie Burnett. Lisa was as perfect child as I've ever seen, and she loved her brother with all her heart. Lisa loved her brother with all her heart. The lose of her brother Mark, took away lots of joy in her early adult years.

Mark Taft Burnett lived a full life at 18 years of age. He witnessed to his school mates, in a loving manner, the story of Christ Jesus. "By accepting Christ Jesus as your personal Savior it would be a life changing experience." He prayed for his friends almost every day. I remember going into his room, one night several times, over a 3 hour span. I later asked him if he has a specific need for the time he had been praying. I asked him if he needed me and his mother to pray with him over an issue? Mark said he had been praying for his friends and classmates who were struggling with some issues. Mark continually, prayed the Lord would strengthen his personal life more daily.

He once asked me how did the Disciples have the power to heal, etc? I shared the story of Christ Jesus telling the Disciples the ability to do this was through fasting and prayer. Mark's desire was to follow the example of Christ Jesus. The Good Lord was very kind allowing our family to borrow him for 18 years. Painful as it was, we had to give Mark back to our Heavenly Father when his work was finished.

The day after his sister Lisa Marie Burnett & Floyd Christian Harris were married, Mark Taft Burnett was killed in an auto accident. Mark was driving on a back road going to get his heart medicine refilled at the Chesnee Drug store. Mark either had a heart attack, or someone may have accidentally ran him off the narrow road. This was approximately 6:10 p.m. 12-18-1988, just prior to the 7 p.m. Christmas Cantata at Chesnee First Baptist Church. The out pouring support, and love, out pouring from our church family and friends, was unbelieveable.

Mark's life is on going. Often Mark's former classmates approach Nell and I sharing the impact Mark had on their lives. Mark certainly had an impact on Nell and I, and his sister Lisa Marie Burnett. He was a best friend, as well as our only Son.

Mark had a dear little friend also, please read the following.

MY BEST FRIEND IS:
This is a paragraph Mark wrote in school about his best friend.

My best friend is one foot tall, one and half feet long. He is very hairy, and has blue eyes. He is salt and pepper colored, and can talk. He has two feet, and two hands, and a nub for a tail. He has pointed ears and loves food. He can eat more than three fat men. He is very playful and can run very, very fast. He will tear up anything in sight, and chews up shoes, recliners, belts, books, paper, and my GI Joe man. He has an orange collar with a green bell on it. He will fight you and chase you, and tries to trip you. If you are a stranger and come in the house, he will be put back in a room, and when you leave he will sniff around. He loves to play football and chase. If you are wondering who this is, his name is Chucky, and he does not go to school. He stays at home. He is a dog to you, but to me he is a person, and my best friend.

Mark, loved attending Drum lessons in Spartanburg. David Haddox is one of the best drummers, and instructors anywhere. David would take a few minutes with Mark exchanging life experiences, and things Mark needed to share with someone. I can't thank David enough for making time, to let Mark vent some of the things that were on his life.
