Marion Archibald was born Dec. 12, 1844 in Athens, OH to parents John (b. @1822 in OH) and Rachael (b. @1824 in PA). He had five brothers and two sisters: James A. (b. @1843 in OH), Oliver (b. @1848 in OH), Melissa (b. @1847 in OH), Jackson (b. @1850 in OH), Levi (b. @1852), Mary (b. @1855) and George (b. @1858). At the time of the 1860 & 1870 U.S. Censuses, Archibald was a resident of Leavenworth, IN. He originally began his Civil War military service in July 1863 with an Indiana Legion militia unit - Lamb's Independent Cavalry Company. Archibald remained in the Indiana Legion until Feb. 1864, when he was recruited to serve in Co. K, 38TH IND INF. Marion was a 19-year-old farmer at the time he enlisted in Co. K; standing 5'6" tall with hazel eyes, and a "fair" complexion.
On Feb. 11, 1864, shortly before he joined his new unit, Marion married Miss Hanna Catherine Melcom (1848-1916) in Crawford Co., IN. He was "injured" near Atlanta in July 1864 during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign, but was never wounded during his service with the 38TH IND INF. He mustered out with the rest of the regiment in Louisville, KY on July 15, 1865. Marion and Hanna spent the rest of their post-war lives farming in Boone Twp., Crawford Co., IN. Together, they raised the following known children: Frances M. (b. @1867), Anabelle (b. @1869), Martin I. (b. @1871), Emery A. (b. @1873), John H. (b. @1875), George (b. @1878), and Percy S. (b. @1891). On April 3, 1882 the 37-year-old Archibald was authorized a federal veteran's pension (app. #444,847; cert. #358,265 – Indiana). In 1916, Marion lost his wife Hanna after 52 years of marriage. Marion passed away two years later on April 17, 1918 near Alton, IN.
