Joseph Clyde was the second son born to James Knox Polk & Ida Mae (Chapman) Bolsinger. He had one older brother, John William, (1877-1964), one younger brother, Edwin Leroy, (1881- 1986), three sisters; Margaret, (1883-1965), Gertrude Alice,
(1886-1955), and Golda G., (1899-1991).
Clyde graduated from the Colesburg's public High school and took a course at Bayess Business School in Dubuque. He then joined a wholesale firm, H.B. Glover Company and the Welch Cook Company in Cedar Rapids and traveled Northeast Iowa and parts of Minnesota for six years.
He began working for W.H.P. Bristol, merchant a merchant in Colesburg, as a clerk when he was 15 years old. Later, he went from partnership with Bristol to then full ownership. He saw huge changes in the mercantile trade where foods like crackers, sugar, and nails were delivered in bulk, then, measured for the customer. Adding his years of mercantile business in Colesburg, (56 yrs.) to his father's and his grandfather's, (Perry C.), they total 112 running, consecutive years. The dates run from 1852 to Jan. 1st 1946. Clyde was united in marriage to Julia Landis, (see her site in the same cemetery) on June 4 1905, in Colesburg by Rev. John Klaus, of Colesburg. They had one son, Cecil Clyde and one daughter, Wilma. They celebrated 62 years of marriage.
In addition to his half century as a Colesburg merchant, Clyde was on the board of director of the Farmers Savings Bank for 35 years, later became President, also serving in that capacity for many years. Other activities in the community were; being a member of the United Commercial Travelers Lodge for 59 years and a member of the Masonic Order, (belonging to the Constellation Lodge.)
Clyde, at age 88 died suddenly at his home. The Appleton funeral home at Edgewood made the arrangements. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist church. The Masonic lodge conducted graveside services. He was survived, at the time, by his son, Cecil Clyde Bolsinger, and daughter, (Mrs. James (Wilma) Remley, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, one brother, Ed Bolsinger, and one sister, Mrs. Robert Bush.
