Gertha Irene Bishop
Gertha Irene Bishop, a former resident of Hinckley, Utah for 42 years passed away in Riverside, California at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Clint Peppers, July 25, 1993 after an extended illness.
Born July 1, 1900 in Salt Lake City, Utah, her parents were Dora Ellis Likes and Agnes Orr Cunningham Likes. She married Heber Harold Virgin in Rexburg, Idaho October 30, 1918, sealed at the Salt Lake City Temple in July 1919. They worked side by side on the family farm until his death in August 1935. She gave birth to 7 children, 4 boys and 3 girls, during their marriage.
In 1938 she married Henry Milo Bishop and they lived in Idaho until moving to California in 1941. She gave birth to 2 more sons.
In the winter of 1948, Gertha and her family moved to Hinckley where the two youngest sons attended school in Hinckley and Delta, Utah.
Henry Milo, lovingly referred 'to as "Bish," passed away in 1962. Gertha continued to live in Hinckley from 1949 until 1990 when she sold her home and moved to Riverside, California to live with her daughter and son_in_law, Shirley and Clint Peppers.
While she lived in Hinckley, her family came to visit regularly and worked to make life easier for her. Work included building, remodeling, painting, and certainly weeding and cleaning the years, along with anything else that needed to be done.
One of her grandsons was once asked where he went on his vacation. "Vacation?" he replied. "I went to my grandmothers house in Hinckley on a work mission!" But he, and everyone else who helped, loved doing it because Gertha always gave so much to them in return. It was their way of helping her maintain her independence so she could live in the home she loved.
Gertha is survived by 6 sons and their spouses: Merle (Kay) Virgin, San Dimas, CA; Lyle (Mary Jean) Virgin, Escondido, CA; Cleon (Patsy) Virgin, Temple City, CA; Paul (Connie) Virgin, Chino, CA; Milo "Mike" (Raquel) Bishop •. , Salt Lake City, UT; Garn (Sharon) Bishop, Fallon, NV; 3 daughters, Leola (Mrs. Royal) Wolters, Salt Lake City, UT; Shirley (Mrs. Clint) Peppers, Riverside, CA; Valair "Lari" (Mrs. Blaine) Nelson, Grand Junction, Co; 57 grandchildren; 103 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; one sister, Lillie Goumer, Boise, ID; one brother, Clair Likes, Salt Lake City, UT; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.
To Gertha, Hinckley was always her home. She had many good neighbors and made many good friends over the years. She taught private art lessons and gave many people massages for relief of their pain and stress over the years. There are far too many to even count the number of people to whom she gave comfort and aid.
Gertha was active in church, working with the young people in M.I.A., primary and Sunday school, or as a teacher. The world is a better place because of the many lives she has touched and now she is coming home to rest in her beloved Hinckley.
Gertha will be buried in the Deseret Cemetery after 11:00 a.m. services at the Hinckley Chapel, and laid to rest next to her husband, Henry Milo Bishop, Saturday, July 31,1993.
