HELEN M. TYRRELL (1931-2012)

Helen M. Tyrrell, 81, of Sycamore, Ill., died Friday, March 9, 2012, at the DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center after a battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Born Jan. 10, 1931, in Hampshire, she was the daughter of Peter and Gladys (Brockman) Petersen. She married Donald C. Tyrrell on Aug. 6, 1950.

Helen was a bookkeeper for the Tyrrell Gravel Company and Tyrrell Lake in Sycamore. She worked for various stores in the Sycamore area and retired from Hollywood Foods in Rockford after serving as the head bookkeeper for many years. Helen was a Sunday school teacher, an avid gardener and a wonderful homemaker. The family enjoyed going to her home, where she had Christmas year-round in her basement and many fun games to play. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she loved to cook family meals at the holidays.

Helen is survived by her husband of 61 years, Donald; five children, Donald Jr. (Debbie), Kathy (Michael) Viollt, Debbie (Steve) Champeny, James (Tammy) and Suzie (Glen) Underwood; her daughter-in-law, Jodi Tyrrell; 13 grandchildren, Jessica, Steven, Jason, Sarah, Anne, Melanie, Aaron, Jimmy, Samantha, Timothy "TJ", Kevin, Rick and Angie; 7 great-grandchildren, Emmerson, Caitlyn, Hailey, Amanda, Branden, Kaylin and Dylan; two sisters, Marjorie Wirsing and Dorlene Besett; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Joseph; her grandson, Adam; and one brother, Roland Hinz.
A visitation will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, at the Butala Funeral Home and Crematory in Sycamore, with a memorial service starting at 1 p.m., with Rev. Bill Landis officiating. Burial will be private.
