Vernie R. Crandall dies of heart attack
Vernie R. Crandall, 72, 502 E. Centennial Ave., prominent Carthage attorney, was found dead at noon Friday at his home after suffering an apparent heart attack.
Mr. Crandall was born May 21, 1915, in Tulsa, Okla., and was a son of the late Mrs. Ethel Radford Crandall. He moved with his family to Jasper as a child and to Carthage as a youth. He was a graduate of Carthage High School and the University of Missouri School of Law, Columbia. He was admitted to the Missouri Bar in April of 1948.
He had served several years as the Carthage city attorney. He was active in the Jasper County Democrats and served as an honorary colonel on the staff of governors Jim Blair, John Dalton and Warren Hearnes.
He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and a past chancellor commander of Fraternal Lodge No. 14, Knights of Pythias. He was a member of the National, Missouri and Jasper County bar associations, the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys, the University of Missouri Athletic Scholarship Association, Carthage Lodge No. 197, AF&AM, a 32nd Degree Mason, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II and was injured in Europe and received various decorations, including the Purple Heart.
He was married to Frances L. Phillips Oct. 22, 1941, at Columbia. She died Nov. 8, 1986.
Survivors include two sons, Cmdr. Stephen G. Crandall, U.S. Navy stationed at Virginia Beach, Va., and Douglas K. Crandall, Carthage Route 4, and five grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Grace Episcopal Church. The Rev. Thomas Hardaway will officiate. Burial will be in Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Knell Mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Episcopal Church.
Members of the Missouri Bar Association will be seated in a group.

The Rev. Thomas Hardaway and the Rev. Ross Stuckey officiated. Mark Merrill was organist.
Honorary pallbearers were Jim Manning, Jeff Manning, John Harrison, John Miller, L. H. Flanigan and George Flanigan. Active pallbearers were Carl Crawford, David Dally, Clayton Metcalf, Bill Duckwall, Jack Crede and Brian Chorum.
Burial was in Park Cemetery. Services were under direction of The Knell Mortuary.
Members of the Jasper County Bar Association were seated in a group.
More than 500 attended.
