Joseph was the 7th child of Michael and Elisabeth (nee Goetz) Brachmann.

He was born in Reittenbuch (now called Raitenbuch), Bayern, Germany and came to the U. S. in about 1850. He was a carpenter by trade, and census and directory records show that he stayed close to his brother Michael in Buffalo, NY.

He married Thersia Schiessel on 6 August 1850 in St. Boniface Catholic Church in Buffalo, and they had 7 children. Theresia died in 1876, and Joseph remarried. His second wife was Regina (nee Kroth), widow of John Friedrich (1828-1914).

Joseph died at the age of 67. He is buried in a large family lot with numerous relatives.
