He was born in Reittenbuch (now called Raitenbuch), Bayern, Germany and came to the U. S. in about 1850. He was a carpenter by trade, and census and directory records show that he stayed close to his brother Michael in Buffalo, NY.
He married Thersia Schiessel on 6 August 1850 in St. Boniface Catholic Church in Buffalo, and they had 7 children. Theresia died in 1876, and Joseph remarried. His second wife was Regina (nee Kroth), widow of John Friedrich (1828-1914).
Joseph died at the age of 67. He is buried in a large family lot with numerous relatives.
