Sylvia Funkhouser left her home in Midland, VA on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 for her heavenly reward at the age of 89. She was born Sylvia Ada Margaret Dettweiler on August 10, 1919 at Midland, VA to Rudolph and "Maggie" Switzer Dettweiler. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Cecil M. Funkhouser. Sylvia is survived by three children and their spouses: Shirley and Johnny Brooks, of Bealeton; Gordon and Judy Funkhouser of Warrenton; and Mike and Ruth Funkhouser of Midland. She leaves six grandchildren: Lorne Holmes and wife Deanna; Regina Holmes; Karry Embrey and husband Matthew: Paul Funkhouser and wife Elizabeth; Lynndey Reid and husband Chris; and Philip Funkhouser and wife Susan. Other close surviving family includes a special niece and her husband, Hazel and Ken Bohling and her four sons, Ashley, Roderick, Matthew and Jeremy Smith and their families; sisters-in-law, Helen Young and Ellen Glascock; and last, but not least, thirteen great grandchildren.

Mrs. Funkhouser was one of three surviving Calverton High School graduates from the class of 1937. Her family was a primary focus all of her life and she loved nothing better than to spend time with those named above, as well as extended family. Sylvia worked for many years as bookkeeper and office manager for Funkhouser's Garage which was owned and operated by Sylvia and Cecil. She was a lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren at Midland and was involved in areas which included the following: Witness Commission, Pastoral Committee, Junior-High Counselor, District Camp Board, and cooked hundreds of meals for various groups whenever a need arose. Mrs. Funkhouser was a charter member of the Bealeton TOPS club, achieving KOPS status and losing 47 pounds. In 1985 she was the first Fauquier American Cancer Society member to top the $20,000 mark in collections. She served as chairman of the Lee District Cancer fund drive for many years. Her favorite pastime was genealogy and she helped research and compile a booklet on her mother's family, the Switzers.

The family will receive friends at Moser Funeral Home, Warrenton on Saturday, March 21 from 6-8 PM. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 22 at 2:00 PM at Church of the Brethren, Midland, VA with interment at the church cemetery. To honor her memory, contributions may be made to any of the following: her beloved Church of the Brethren 10434 Old Carolina Road, Midland, VA 22728; American Cancer Society, 2654 Valley Avenue, Suite B, Winchester, VA 22601; or to those who helped her and the family so much toward the end of her life, which is Capital Hospice, 10530 Linden Lake Plaza, Suite 200, Manassas, VA 20109
