Abial graduated from Dartmouth College in 1858, and was admitted to the bar in June, 1861.
On September 12 1961, Abial mustered in to Company H, 4th Vermont Regiment as a comissioned 1st Lieutenant. He was promoted to Captain of Company K on November 5, 1862. After reciving a serious head wound at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1964, Abial mustered out September 30, 1864. He then served as Captain of Company E, 24th Vermont Reserve Corps before being discharged in 1865.
In 1866, Captain Fisher moved to North Carolina. There, he worked in the lumber industry. In 1868 he was elected as a delegate of the constitutional convention, and after North Carolina officially rejoined the union he served two terms oin the state legislature.
From 18868 to 1871, Abial served as North Carolina's Adjutant General . In 1871 he went to Washington, where he accepted a position in the pension office. He worked there until June, 1893.
In September 1891, Abial was stricken with paralysis, from which he recovered . In April 1895, he again suffered an attack while at work, and passed away the next day.
