His first law practice was in Crook City, SD in April 1878. He move to Rapid City in 1878 and opened a law office with Chauncy L. Wood on Main Street below the Yankton House Hotel.
In the fall he was elected probate Judge of Pennington County. He served in the State Legislature in 1883 and 1884. In 1889 he was elected Judge of the 7th circuit and took office upon admission of South Dakota into statehood. He married Clara M. Kerr on 2/25/1882 in Chicago, having already built a house on 6th Street in Rapid City in 1880.
