Mary married Judge Samuel Newton Braswell in 1854 likely in Georgia. She came to Texas with her husband before 1860 and settled in Mt. Pleasant, Texas where they lived for several years. Her husband established a lucrative legal practice in the area.
He served in the Confederate Army during the civil war. After the war he returned to his legal practice and was elected Texas State Senator in 1865 from the 8th district and took part in the legislative session of 1866 dealing with reconstruction issues.
After his term end, the family moved to Corsicana where they were involved in a mercantile enterprise. They moved to Dallas in 1873 and Judge Braswell developed a legal practice in the city. He was elected Justice of the Peace in Precinct #1 for three terms before 1900.
Obituary from Dallas Morning News, January 17, 1908:
"Death of Mrs. M. A. Braswell:
Has lived in Dallas 35 years,
She died yesterday at 190 Travis Avenue. The funeral will be from the residence to the Greenwood Cemetery at 4 O'clock this afternoon. The deceased who was the wife of Judge S. N. Braswell was born in Georgia December 9, 1836 and had lived in Dallas for 35 years. She is survived by her husband, three daughters, Mrs. Oscar Garrison, Miss Emma and Miss Daisy Braswell and a brother, G. J. Anderson of Westminster who was at her bedside at the time of her death."
According to the 1900 Dallas County Census, Mary gave birth to 9 children, 4 of which were living at the time of the census. She was active in the Trinity Methodist Church. (Contributed by C B Mays)
