Mary married Judge Samuel Newton Braswell in 1854 likely in Georgia. She came to Texas with her husband before 1860 and settled in Mt. Pleasant, Texas where they lived for several years. Her husband established a lucrative legal practice in the area.

He served in the Confederate Army during the civil war. After the war he returned to his legal practice and was elected Texas State Senator in 1865 from the 8th district and took part in the legislative session of 1866 dealing with reconstruction issues.

After his term end, the family moved to Corsicana where they were involved in a mercantile enterprise. They moved to Dallas in 1873 and Judge Braswell developed a legal practice in the city. He was elected Justice of the Peace in Precinct #1 for three terms before 1900.
