Sam was a German sherpard/chow mixed dog, that was given to me as a sweetest day gift from my ex husband. When we moved into an apartment, we were unable to take her with us so she went to live with my parents. Even though she had a mean appearance,, she was really playful and sweet dog. Sam was the best guard dog that a person could ask for. Whenever someone would walk down my parents street, they would instantly cross to the other side, when they reached my parents house, because they were scared that she was going to jump the fence and come after them. Sam was really one of the family. My dad would always take her for long drives, and my mom would always by her an ice cream cone once a week during the summer. When my mom died in 2000, you could tell the Sam knew that she was gone. She moped around the house for two weeks, and would not eat anything. Luckily for us, the cemetery where my mom is would let us bring her as long as she was on a leash. About a few months ago we noticed that it was becoming more and more difficult for her to get up and move around. So, my dad took her to the vet, and it was discovered she had arthritis. They gave her some medicine and within a couple of days she was back to her old self, running up and down the driveway terrorizing the birds, or whatever creature that was bold enough to come into the back yard. About two weeks ago, my dad went to let her outside, and she never came out of the basement when he called her. We went down to the basement and found her laying lifeless on the floor with this awful smell was coming from her. We took her to the vet, and it was discovered that she had cancer, and it had progressed very rapidly. The vet told us she was not going to last the night. We decided that the best thing to do was not have her in pain and end her suffering. She was cremated and my dad and I split the ashes We even buried a small amount near my mother's headstone. My daughter took it the hardest. She and Sam had practically grown up together. But as she says," Sam and Nana are both now watching over me in heaven."
