FRED BISSEN FAMILY

Fred Bissen was born on February 14, 1920, on the family farm northwest of Stacyville, Iowa. He was the son of Mathias Bissen and Margaret (Smith) Bissen. The family included Fred and his five sisters. Belonging to St. John's Catholic church at Johnsburg, Minnesota, they were educated at St. John's parochial school. Fred also attended Adams High School for a year.

On August 21, 1940 a car accident took the lives of both his parents, and at 20, Fred had to take over running the family farm.

On June 23, 1942 Fred married Myrna Elliot, daughter of Perry A. Elliot and Isabel (Elgas) Elliot, who also lived in the Stacyville area.

Fred and Myrna were blessed with 12 children: James (married Rebecca Ronne), October 4, 1969, Joyce (married Edward Kriedermacher on August 26 1967), Howard, who died in Vietnam on January 8, 1968, June (married Walter Wynkoop on Dec. 29, 1967), Dale (married Sandra Kiefer, Nov. 7, 1970), Shirley (married Peter Lukasiewicz, July 11, 1987), Eloise, who is single, Russell Bissen (married Mary Ellen Bahr, April 3, 1976, Rosalie (married Robert Kipling, June 16, 1984), Lawerence (Larry) (married Barbara Adams, June 19, 1983) and Mary Bissen, who is single.

Myrna Marie Bissen, 85, of Stacyville, Iowa died on Jan. 13, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Myrna Elliott was born to Mary Isabelle (Elgas) and Perry Arbor Elliott on April 8, 1923 in New Haven, Iowa. After attending school in Stacyville she married Fred Bissen on June 23, 1942. They made their home on the Bissen family farm near Johnsburg, Minn. Myrna was a homemaker and a wonderful mother to their twelve children. She enjoyed sewing, quilt making, oil painting and gardening. Her love of flowers brought joy to many as she surrounded their retirement home in Stacyville with beautiful baskets and beds of flowers. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Myrna was a member of the Christian Mothers, Catholic Aid Association and the Legion Auxiliary. She was also a Gold Star Mother.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Fred; four sons, Jim (Becky) Bissen, Rose Creek, Minn., Dale (Sandy) Bissen, Adams, Minn., Russ (Mary) Bissen, Larry (Barb) Bissen both of Stacyville; seven daughters, Joyce (Ed) Kreidermacher, Altura, Minn., June Bissen, Jupiter, Fla., Shirley Bissen (Peter Lukasiewicz), St. Louis, Mo., Elly Bissen (Curt Anderson), Santa Barbara, Calif., Emily (Dean) Kiefer, Adams, Minn., Rosalie (Bob) Kipling, Omaha, Neb., Mary Bissen, Windermere, Fla.; 34 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; siblings: Orian Brown, Genoa City, Wis., Doris Douty, Carol Vogel and Dean (Virginia) Elliott all of Adams, John (Theresa) Elliott, Altura, Minn. and Isabelle Mullenbach, Johnsburg.

Myrna was preceded in death by her son, Howard who died in Vietnam; sister, Pauline Blaser; granddaughter, Annette, daughter of Jim and Becky Bissen.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery. Wake service will be at the St. John's Church Hall on Friday, Jan. 16, from 4 to 8 p.m. with the rosary at 4:30 p.m. Adams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
