James William Kelley

James William Kelley was born February 9, 1857 in the state of Pennsylvania and passed away April 21, 1934, in Humboldt, Kansas. His father and mother passed on when he was about four years old. He then made his home with Peter and Prudence Sammons of Creston, Iowa, until at the age of 17 he went to Greensburg, Indiana to join his brother Thomas Kelley, where he met and married Esther Ida Updike on September 11, 1878. They made their home in Indiana for four years and then moved to Adams county, Iowa, where they resided until 1902 , moving from there to Humboldt, Kansas, where he lived until his death.

To this union were born ten children; Otis Arthur, Pekin, Ill., Charles Gordon deceased, Sarah Nancy Higgins, Humboldt, Samuel Monroe, deceased, William W., Humboldt, Henry Lawrence, Humboldt, Ira Emerson, Richgrove, Calif., Grace Abeline Gibson, deceased, Esther May Capelin, deceased, Orlo Thomas, Branson, MO. Mrs Kelley passed on July 11, 1920.

The family moved to a farm south west of Humboldt upon their arrival here. Later they sold the farm and moved to Humboldt. After Mrs. Kelley's death, Mr. Kelley made his home with his children. At the time of his death and for some time previous he was living with his son Lawrence.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his surviving children; twenty grandchildren, one great-grandchild and three foster brothers, living in Iowa.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon, April 24, at 2:30 with the Rev. Walter Bell, pastor of the Christian Church, Officiating. Interment was in Mount Hope Cemetery.
