Gladys E. Baldwin, 99, formerly of 655 West Chestnut Street, Lancaster, Pa., died Monday, July 29, 2002 at the Mifflin Center, Cumru Township, Berks County, Pa., where she had resided since March 1999.
Her husband, James T. Baldwin, died November 3, 1961.
Born in Hummelstown, Dauphin County, she was a daughter of the late David K. and Gertrude (Reed) Ebersole.
She taught French and English at Penn Manor High School, Millersville, from 1958 until 1968 when she retired. She had previously taught English in Cape May, N.J.; Conshohocken, Montgomery County; and Philadelphia; and had substituted in various schools in Virginia and Pennsylvania, including the Lancaster area.
She was one of the founders of the Lancaster Women's Garden Club.
She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Lancaster.
She graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls in 1921 and earned a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, in 1925. She did advanced studies in French at Middlebury College in Vermont, Laval University in Quebec, and at the Sorbonne in Paris. She received a master's degree in education from Temple University, Philadelphia, in the 1960's.
She is survived by five daughters: Sally B., wife of Carl A. Wiker, Ephrata; Barbara B. Donovan, Bern Township, Berks County; Catharine B., wife of William L. Hugo, Jr., Clinton, N.Y.; Patricia J., wife of Richard Kingwell, Ocala, Fla.; and Diana E., wife of Carroll D. Swenson, Paoli, Montgomery County.
Other survivors include 19 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Memorial Service from the Unitarian Universalist Church of Lancaster, 538 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, on Friday at 10:00 am with the Rev. Jo-An Glasse officiating. Interment in Philadelphia Memorial Gardens, Frazer, PA. There will be no public viewing, however, friends may greet the family at the church on Friday from 9:30 am until the time of the service. Please omit flowers.
