Physician. He was the author of Modern Surgery and authored and co-authored a variety of medical textbooks during his career. He was a Professor of Medicine at the Thomas Jefferson Medical School. He was chief gynecologist at Jefferson Hospital and St. Agnes Hospital in Philadelphia. He was the son of John C. DaCosta and Hannah Norris. He edited the first American edition of Gray's Anatomy in 1905.

During the Civil war he served in the State Fencibles Pennsylvania Militia.
