At one year of age, John's family was living in Perry, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio. John was four years old when brought by his parents to California in 1853. In 1860, at the age of 11, he and his family resided in Mud Springs, El Dorado County. When "of age," he attended the San Jose Institute, then clerked in a dry goods and grocery store in Yountville, Napa County for 2 years for R.K. Berry. Upon the death of his father, he returned home and took care of the estate.
The 1880 Census listed him living in Shingle Springs, with his occupation as "Saloon Keeper." In 1884-5, he was proprietor of Meyer's Hotel in Shingle Springs. Next he went to Lake Tahoe and invested in a resort there, which proved unprofitable. In 1888-9 to 1891-2, he was the proprietor of the American Exchange Hotel in Folsom, which was the "leading commercial and family hotel." He was considered a "whole-souled, accommodating and kind host, thoroughly understanding how to make his guests comfortable and contented." The hotel burned in the late 1880's or early 1890's.
He was an Odd Fellow of "ten years standing," a member of Cosumnes Lodge No. 63 of Latrobe, El Dorado County, and at the time of his death, was the "last living charter member."
In 1887 he was the Conductor of Sacramento Electric, Gas and Railway. Co. He was the City Water Assessor of Sacramento under Mayor Clinton White. He operated the old Philadelphia Hotel on 8th Street between "J" and "K" for many years. The 1910 census (at age 61) listed his occupation as "watchman" of a building. The 1920 census listed him as a landlord of an apartment house. The 1930 census listed him as "retired," which he well deserved, after a long life of diversity, and a wide variety of occupations.
