He and his first wife, Mary, had 7 children. She passed away and he married his second wife, Emma H Morris. They had one daughter, Sallie.
Mitchell was a soldier in the Confederate Army. He enlisted as a private on 4 March 1862 in Company C, 11th Battalion Infantry Regiment Georgia. He transferred out of Company C, 11th Battalion Infantry Regiment Georgia on 12 May 1862. He then transferred to Company C, 47th Infantry Regiment Georgia on 12 May 1862. He was captured and held prisoner by the Yankees on 26 Apr 1865 at Greensboro, NC.
Mitchell passed away on the Fourth of July, 1904, at the age of 71.
