What follows are the fruits of some genealogical research initiated by Ronald C. Nelson who is the great-grandson of Elna Björklund, Fredrik's mother. I have included the introductory comments which he made in an email to me, followed by the research done by the Swedish archivists. At some points, Ronald parenthetically inserts his own comments and these are all followed by his initials, "RCN". T.N.

Gustafva, wife of Karl Justus, mother of Ernest Nelson, et al., emigrated from Sweden, arriving in Marquette, Ks. with infant son John and her mother Elna in early September, 1902. It was known that Gustafva left a brother, Fredrik, a son of Elna. The family never knew anything of Fredrik and Neut insisted that he was "quite certain" that there was never any communication between Fredrik and his mother, Elna, or sister, Gustafva. This was always a puzzle to me, so I decided to pursue the matter in depth. I communicated with the city archives in Malmö, Sweden and hit pay dirt there. I learned of his employment, death, marriages, and children. I don't believe any of this was known to Elna or to Gustafva. It's pretty sad, since Fredrik was killed three years before his mother died. Here is the original note from the Malmö City Archives detailing Fredrik's life with some inserts by yours truly:

Regarding your request for information about Fredrik Björklund, b.18 Jul 1873 in Örtofta:
He came to Malmö Caroli parish on 15 Jan 1898 from Knästorp and lived in the Altona XIII quarter. His occupation is listed as former nurse.

(I don't know whether to believe this; my impression is that Fredrik had no education in the medical field, but maybe no qualifications were involved to be a "nurse" in that place at that time - RCN)

[Perhaps he was a hospital orderly. T.N.]

He moved to Malmö S:t Pauli parish on 13 Nov 1899.
He was married on 15 Feb 1902 in Malmö S:t Pauli parish to servant ("piga" in Swedish) Anna Maria Hansson, b.30 Jun 1871 in Prussia. At the time they had two children; which Fredrik acknowledged as his on 10 Jan 1902, as having been conceived under promise of marriage. They were:

Oscar Fredrik, b.1 Dec 1895 in Lund
Nils Fabian, b.13 Sep 1901 in Malmö S:t Pauli parish.

(Our family seems addicted to illegitimate children, but then it seems to have been common in Sweden, at least in those days - RCN.)

The family moved to the Konrad IV quarter in Malmö S:t Pauli parish after the marriage. Their daughter Ellen Maria was born there on 25 Apr 1904. Fredrik is now listed as a worker. By 1907 they were living in the Gabriel VIII quarter of Malmö S:t Johannes parish, where their second daughter Ester Ingeborg was born on 9 May 1907. In the same parish book which registers her birth, the son Nils Fabian is listed as "idiot".

(Hmmm - RCN)

Fredrik is listed as "worker" until 1910 when he is listed as "puller" ("dragare" in Swedish). This is still his occupation in 1916, when his wife died.

(I have tried to learn just what a "puller" does; as best I can determine, the usual translation of "dragare" is "draft animal." That's not very helpful, but I guess it's clear that heavy manual labor is implied. Not good for a man of my indolent tastes! - RCN)

Anna Maria Hansson died on 19 Mar 1916 at the Gillet II quarter of Malmö S:t Johannes parish. Cause of death was cancer of the uterus.

The daughter Ester Ingeborg had died on 3 Mar 1915 at the same location of "spondylitis tbc".

(at age 8 - RCN)

Fredrik Björklund, then a longshoreman ("stuveriarbetare" in Swedish), died on 15 Oct 1927. He was then living at the Källan III quarter of Malmö S:t Johannes parish. Cause of death was "crushed by lifting crane". He died at the hospital in Malmö.

Oskar Fredrik Björklund died on 28 Feb 1976 in Stockholm. He had been widowed on 18 Jan 1933.

(wife's name is unknown, but probably could be found without undue difficulty; there may be children from that marriage, but that's unknown too - RCN.)

Nils Fabian Björklund died on 29 Nov 1974 in Malmö.
Ellen Maria, married name Svensson, died on 14 Mar 1994 in Malmö. She had been widowed on 20 May 1969. Her husband was a shoe factory worker named Carl Oscar Svensson.

(could be children from here as well; unknown - RCN)

The estate inventory for Fredrik Björklund in 1928 gives the total value of his estate as 148 SEK.

(roughly $20 today - RCN)

His estate consisted of one couch, one bureau, one table, one mirror, three chairs, two ornamental clocks, pictures, carpets and curtains; his clothes, various linens, kitchen ware.

(sounds like a life on the edge to me - RCN)

His estate received funds from the insurance company and his union, so that even though the debts to the estate (mostly funeral costs) were 550 SEK, there were 295 SEK left as inheritance.

(three children were still alive at Fredrik's death and divide $40? - RCN)

I can also inform you that Johan Nilsson Björklund died on 1 Nov 1898 in Wrånga, Örtofta parish (Örtofta parish Husförhörslängd AI:9 page 139).

(This is a bit puzzling. Johan dies in 1898 in Örtofta, wife Elna emigrates with Gustafva in 1902. On their emigration papers, Gustafva lists her last residence as Örtofta and Elna lists hers as Malmö. At this date Fredrick is known to be living in Malmö. I can't help supposing that Elna may have been living with him. That conjecture would rather contradict the belief that they weren't on good terms, I guess. No way to know, really. Neut Nelson personally told me he was absolutely certain there was no communication of Fredrik with Gustafva or Elna. It just seems very odd - RCN.)

And here is some later correspondence from the same archivist:

"Regarding your request for information about Fredrik Björklund, b.18 Jul 1873 in Örtofta:

I am very sorry you have had to wait so long for an answer.

He was buried on 18 October 1927 at Malmö Eastern Municipal Cemetery (in Swedish: Östra Kyrkogården i Malmö). He was interred (not cremated) in a single grave (sw: ensamgrav). Grave number 259, court (sw: gård) d, 2nd quarter (sw: 2:dra kvarteret).

It is unlikely that his grave still exists. Swedish cemeteries reuse graves after about 20-25 years.
