Military Officer. He joined the regiment of William Smallwood during the American Revolution, enlisting as a Cadet shortly before the battle of Long Island. He was soon appointed a First Lieutenant in the 11th Pennsylvania Regiment, and took part in the crossing of the Delaware River and Battle of Trenton, the Battle of Brandywine, the Valley Forge encampment in the winter of 1777-1778), and the Battle of Monmouth Courthouse. He later became a Captain in the regiment commanded by his uncle, General David Forman, and in 1779 he succeeded James Monroe as Aide to General William Alexander (Lord Stirling). After the Revolution, Forman managed his plantation, "Rose Hill", and was prominent in Maryland politics and government, serving terms in the state legislature between 1790 and 1800. During the War of 1812 he was a Brigadier General in command of a militia brigade, took part in the defense of Baltimore, and was present at the bombing of Ft. McHenry. In October, 1824 he was designated to the Marquis de LaFayette in Maryland during Lafayette's tour of the United States. In 1829 he was appointed Major General and commander of the Maryland MIlitia's 2nd Division. Forman was a horse racing enthusiast and served as the first President of the Maryland Jockey Club.
