Recently we received communication of the already deceased Mr. August Strubing of Hicksville Township who died on the first of March. He was born on November 17, 1825 in Mecklenburg-Schwerin and immigrated in his youth to this country. Forty years ago he settled in Hicksville and remained living there until his death. Industrous, thrifty and unbreakable honesty have been so blessedly steadfast in his case that he was able to have a carefree retirement. His death was caused by an asthmatic condition. He is survived by five children: Mrs. Maria Böster, Ernst Strübing, Miss Line Strübing, Mrs. Mathilde Frey and Mrs. Minnie Place, who all live in the western part of Defiance County. His (female) partner preceded him into eternity in 1894. His body was brought to the grave on March 4 with the Lutheran Pastor Hogshead officiating.
It is not clear why the headstone spelling includes an e. There are several examples of August's signature available and each indicate he used only the u or the umlaut to signify the long u.
August was born in Mecklenburg and immigrated to America in 1853. He went to a small town in Wisconsin called Abel in honor of his future father in law. He first appears on an election form dated April 1, 1856. He married Minnie Abel in 1858 and they started their family soon after. In 1864, at the request of Judge Patton, August moved his family to Defiance County, Ohio to care for the Judge's farm. Later, his daughter Mary would be the caregiver to the Judge's children. Eventually August purchased his own land and he and Minnie raised four daughters and one son. August suffered from Asthma and died after a long illness. There is a record of August traveling back to Germany in 1877 and then a return trip which included his mother. She lived with the family until her death in 1881.
