Obituary of Margaret Mackenzie
New London Day, Dec. 12, 2008

Waterford - Margaret Agnes MacKenzie, one of three children of Hugh MacKenzie and Nettie (Edwards) MacKenzie, died peacefully at her home in Waterford on Dec. 9, 2008.

She was born April 23, 1923, in New London, and raised on her father's Waterford dairy farm located at 317 Rope Ferry Road. She resided almost continuously in the home, which was purchased by her father in 1917, until her death.

She was educated at the Williams Memorial Institute in New London, graduating in 1940. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Connecticut in 1944 and belonged to the American Association of University Women.

Margaret took great pride in her work in cryptography for the War Department at the Pentagon during World War II. She also worked as a librarian for several years at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London. She was a member of the Flanders Baptist Church in East Lyme and was president of its Community Circle for several years.

Margaret was known for her infectious laughter and her humor. She particularly enjoyed painting and the company of her family whom she would accompany to Scottish events and the beach. Margaret was an avid reader and book club member. Despite her advanced age, she retained her faculties and, up to the end of her life, enjoyed the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle.

She is survived by her brother, Hugh MacKenzie and his wife, Mary Carol, of Chaplin and their three children, Hugh MacKenzie of Columbia, Kate MacKenzie of Brooklyn, and Cameron MacKenzie of Waterford; and by her brother-in-law, the Rev. Allen Scott of East Lyme, and children, the Rev. MacKenzie Scott of Lewisburg, Pa., the Rev. Alan Scott of East Lyme, the Rev. Jonathan Scott of Pomfret, and Margaret Watson of Erie, Pa. She is also survived by 14 great-nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.

She was predeceased by her sister, Mary, and her niece, Molly MacKenzie Blauvelt, who died in 1995.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 15, at the Flanders Baptist Church in East Lyme. Burial is private.
