The following obituary was originally written in Wendish by Pastor Jan Kilian; transliterated and translated into German by Martin Strauch; and then translated into English by H. Melvin Symmank and provided by the Texas Wendish Heritage Society:
In honor and love we remember the unmarried young man, John, oldest son of the marriage of George Bamsch, farmer in Serbin and his wife. The Lord called him out of this world two weeks ago yesterday at 10:30 a.m. His body was given Christian burial two weeks ago today with a brief devotion at the church and blessing at the grave.
He was born in Europe on 20 January 1852. His grieving father is George Bamsch, a farmer in Serbin and grieving mother was Rosina nee Schatte from Jahmen. At his baptism he received the Christian name John. From his birth onward he was of sound health and grew up to the joy of his parents. He moved with them to America where he helped and worked at home until today three weeks ago when he lay on the sickbed and yesterday two weeks ago at 10:30 a.m. the Lord called him home. He was only 21 years and six months (minus one day) old.
May the Lord comfort the grieving father and mother; two grieving brothers, Ernst and Carl August; two grieving sisters, Maria and Anna; his father’s brother in Europe; the grandmother on his mother’s side in Europe; his mother’s two sisters in Europe; and near and distant friends.
Heartfelt thanks to all friends who decorated the remains with the flowers and also the demonstrated love, especially to Anna Hohle for her demonstrated love and help, to Matthew Mrosko for the transporting the body, to the young men who carried the body to the grave and to the mourners.
The hymn 502.
Funeral sermon on July 27 , 434, after the sermon, 522.
