Bud married Virginia Vale Erickson (aka Dolly) on September 28, 1940 and helped raise her children: Ben and Vail Petis. They had son Duane Kermit Akre.

Bud worked at Blandin Paper Company.

He later married Myrtle Gunvor Sorgren-Morken. Myrtle had two children: Carl Bradley and Tobilyn Marita Morken.

Bud passed away on May 10, 1979 and is buried in Harris Cemetery in Itasca County.
