Born the year of the Great South Carolina Earthquake, when Summerville was part of Colleton County, Maggie was the only daughter of Levi Daniel and Madalina Cocowitch Grooms. She moved to Florida about 1900 with her mother, step-father, George Hussel, and half-sister, Wilhelmina.
She had three husbands: Milton Pratt (1870-About 1906), Thomas Allen Roquemore (1862- ) and Richard A. Christopher (1867-1949). After her 1936 divorce from Richard Christopher she legally assumed the name Roquemore.
Maggie's four children from her second marriage to Thomas Allen Roquemore, Florence Louise, Edna Madalina, John Edwin and Thomas Allen, Jr., and her son, Oakley, from her marriage to Milton Pratt grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. There in her shotgun house she raised boxer dogs in her backyard and parakeets on the back porch. Her adopted son, Ralph Albert, shared her home when she could no longer live alone.
Confined to a wheelchair from the 1930's she presented a spirit of determination to her grandchildren. We will not forget her or Buddy the Parrot who whistled at us from his cage and loudly called, "Buddy wants a cracker!"
