James was a retired New York State Highway patrolman. He was married Nov. 13,1948 to Mary Cheever.

Clayton --- James W. Burnell,65,Cape Vincent Road,retired New York State trooper,was pronounced dead on arrival at 7;31 a.m. Wednesday in the emergency room of Edward John Noble Hospital,Alexandria Bay. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Kathleen Adams-Sheperd,rector, officiating. Burial will be in Depauville Cemetery.

Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Cummings Funeral Home. Contributions may be made in his name to the Clayton Volunteer Fire Deptment or Christ Episcopal Church.

Surviving are his wife Mary E.;a son James W. Jr.,Hannibal;a daughter, Roseann Burnell,Willowick,Ohio;four grandchildren;two sisters,Mrs. Ruby Hicks,Naples,and Mrs. James ( Euphemia) Doane,Watertown, and nieces,nephews and cousins.

A brother, Frederick E.,died June 16,1969.

He was born March 13,1926,in Carthage,a son of Frederick W. and Emma Carbery Burnell. He was a graduate of Carthage High School.

He married Mary E. Cheever Nov. 13,1948,at St. Paul's Episcopal Church ,Brownville,with the Rev. Leland J. Frye officiating. The couple resided in Chaumont before moving to Clayton in 1955. Mr. Burnell joined the New York State Police in December 1953. He retired Aug. 1,1974,after 21 years of service. At the time of his retirment he had been assigned to the Alexandria Bay trooper substation. Mr. Burnell was currently employed in the service department of Bonnie Castle Marina,Alexandria Bay.

He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church,where he was junior warden,chief acolyte,chalice bearer and financial secretary.
