Birth: Apr. 11, 1898
Ellerbe
Richmond County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Feb. 7, 1983
Rockingham
Richmond County
North Carolina, USA

Lena was the youngest child of Mary Ella "Mollie" Bennett and James Terry "Jim" McLeod. She had three brothers (Archie, Lazelle and Furman) and a sister Laura. Laura died as a toddler before Lena was born.

Lena spent most of her life in her father's household in Mineral Springs Township, near Ellerbe, in Richmond County. After her mother's death in 1922, Lena would have kept house for Jim and her single brother Furman. Lazelle lived in Ellerbe with his wife and young children. Archie worked in the retail lumber business and had moved to Charlotte.

In July 1927 tragedy struck when Archie's wife died following childbirth. The baby lived for almost five months. It appears that during this time Lena and her father moved in with Archie in Charlotte as Lena is found with her widowed father and widowed brother living in Archie's Charlotte residence in the 1930 US Federal Census.

On August 24, 1935, Lena McLeod and Grady Capel were married in Charlotte. Grady was from Black Jack Township in Richmond County, which adjoins Mineral Springs and is near the McLeod home. He worked as a bookkeeper for a furniture factory in Richmond County. Like Lena, he was 37, had never married and lived with family.

Shortly after their marriage, Grady and his brothers, Arthur and Lacy, opened the Capel Grocery across from the Richmond County Courthouse in Rockingham.

The 1940 US Federal Census shows Grady and Lena sharing a house with her father and brother Furman in Mineral Springs Township. This would be the McLeod home on Sandhills Game Management Road (aka Gibson Mill Road). It is located at the intersection of Sandhills Game Management Road and Beaverdam Church Road. [In August 2011, the house was owned by the Price Richardson Hunt Club and undergoing renovation.]

The attached photo of Grady and Lena was taken circa 1940 at a McLeod family reunion in Robeson County NC. (See photo caption for details.) They appear very happy with his hands resting on her arms.

Lena's father, James Terry McLeod, died in 1944 at age 87; her brother, Furman James McLeod, in 1952 at age 59; husband Grady in 1960 at age 62; and Lena in 1983 at age 84. She and Grady are buried in the Capel family plot at Eastside Cemetery.
