Shawnee resident Mary Ellen Bergsten passed away Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008.
She was born June 3, 1940 to Orval and Norma Casteel in Bowlegs. They later moved to the Prairie Valley community where she graduated from high school in 1958. She then attended the University of Oklahoma School of Nursing recieving a diploma in nursing in 1961.
Mary and Cecil were married June 23, 1961. They had three children, Steven Bergsten (wife, Lana) of Hurst, Texas, David Bergsten (wife, Jamie) of Shawnee and Cheryl Pfeffer (husband, James) of Collinsville, Okla.
Mary returned to the University of Oklahoma in 1998 and recieved a B.A. degree in Sociology.
She worked in nursing for 40 years and from 1969 to 2001 she was employed at the Shawnee Medical Center Hospital were she retired, Oct. 2001. After retiring, she purchased a quilting machine and quilted for the public. She was a member of the Spinning Spools Quilt Guild and made many baby quilts which were donated to community projects. She was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church where she had served as a Sunday school teacher, assisted with Bible school and served on several committees.
She was preceded in death by her dad, Orval Casteel and grandson, Andrew Bergsten.
She is survived by her husband, Cecil of the home; three children, two daughters-in-law; one son-in-law; mother, Norma Casteel of Shawnee; brother and sister-in-law, Les and Jeanette Casteel from Harrison, Ark.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and Royce Davis of Midwest City, Patricia and James Fowler, Plano, Texas, Kathy and Rick Crosby, Bethel, four grandchildren, Ellen, Emma, Ethan Pfeffer, Olivia Bergsten, numerous nieces and nephews and the anticipated birth of grandson Tyler Bergsten in January.
Visitation will be held for Mary 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 2008 at Resthaven Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008 at Fairview Baptist Church with graveside service at Resthaven to follow.
Mary wished to have donations made to Unity Cancer Center in Shawnee in lieu of flowers.
