BURLINGTON - John F. Carroll, 84, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at his home after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease. He was the husband of Catherine F. (Welchlin) Carroll.
He was born in Boston, the son of the late William and Mary Carroll. Mr. Carroll grew up in South Boston and during his teenage years moved to Mission Hill.
During World War II, Mr. Carroll joined the U.S. Army and served as a surgical technician in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and in the end of the war at the 374th Station Hospital. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon. His wife-to-be joined the Marines.
Following the war, the two veterans returned to Mission Hill and eventually started dating and were married in 1951. In 1956, they purchased a home in Burlington.
Mr. Carroll was employed for more than 30 years by Gillette in South Boston, where he was a manager and supervisor, responsible for plant maintenance.
He enjoyed working around the house and shared his talent and knowledge with his daughter, Catherine.
In addition to his wife of 53 years, he is survived by a daughter, Catherine E. Carroll of Burlington.
He was also the brother of the late Catherine Cody and Mary and Margaret Carroll.
A funeral was held Dec. 21 from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home in Burlington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret's Church. Interment was in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Burlington.
