Maria Margaretta, daughter of John Gerrard Coster of the fabulously wealthy Dutch merchant family of New York City, died the night of the great fire in that city. Her husband, Edwin, known as the Adonis for his good looks, died a few years later at age 39. He left 5 orphans.
Although their 3 sisters remained in New York with relatives, Charles and his brother, Edwin Upshur, moved to Kentucky lived with their paternal uncle James S Berryman of Fayette Co, KY. They attended Centre College in Danville, KY (Est 1819].
Edwin lived the remainder of his life in Lexington, Fayette, KY; but Charles returned to the glow of the social life into which he was born. He was married on 5 Jun 1860 in New Haven, CT to Harriet Whitney (1838–1912) d/o Henry Whitney (1812 – 1856) & Hannah Eugenia Lawrence (1815–1844) of New Haven.
