Born in Durkheim, Bayern (Bavaria), to Karl and Elizabeth Berkdoldt Günther, Friedrich married Anna Marie Mesel, daughter of Antone Mesel in 1867. The couple began their family right away and had a son Wilhelm in 1868. Another son, Karl, was born in 1871, then two daughters, Margaret and Elisabeth in 1875 and 1876. In 1881 as the Günther family prepared to migrate to the USA, ten year old Karl was killed in a schoolboy prank. His broken hearted parents and siblings left Germany aboard the SS Pollux. They settled in Logan County, Arkansas near the town of Paris. Another daughter, Anna Marie, was born the following spring in their one room dirt floor log cabin.

Friedrich farmed the land and did his best to eke out a living and provide for his family. The family were one of many German Catholic families to settle in the area.

The family name evolved into Guenther.
