W.A. HURLBUT WAS A NATIVE OF NEW YORK STATE
LAID TO REST IN BIBLICAL COLLEGE CEMETERY.
RESIDED IN THIS CITY FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS.
Deceased had Been Sufferer All His Life From Affliction Which Came Early In His Youth.
Funeral services for the late W. A. Hurlbut, for 5 years a resident of this city, were held on Thursday afternoon at the Bible college chapel. The services were conducted by the Rev. J. C. Crawford and were attended by a number of friends and acquaintances of the deceased.
The music was furnished by Mrs. Clara Hustad and Miss Lily Olson, who sang several hymns. Students from the Biblical college acted as pallbearers. Interment was made in the Biblical college cemetery south of this city where a beautiful plot of ground has been dedicated for this purpose.
His Life Sketch.
Waltoer (sic) A. Hurlbut was born in Newfane, N.Y., June 30, 1855, and died December 4, 1923, making him 67 years, 5 months and 3 days of age. He was the second child of the Rev. H. C. Hurlbut and Jane E. Hurlbut. Four sisters and one brother survive, Mrs. Hattie Goodenberger of Scotts Bluff, Neb., Mrs. Julia Wright of Clay, New York; Mrs. Joseph Laville of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. John Hurlbut (sic) of Grand Rapids, Mich., and the Rev. W. H. Hurlbut of Maple Hill, Kans.
At three years of age he moved with his parents to Michigan where he resided until 1903 going into the southwest at that time. At 14 years of age he was crippled with spinal meningitis which incapacitated him for actual service much of his life. He taught school at intervals but was unable to follow that work continuously.
Early in his life he became a follower of Christ and wherever he has lived he has united with some Christian church in the community.
July 12, 1918 he came to Boone where he has resided until the time of his death.
Walter taught at the Hinderleider School, District No. 8, Berlin Twp., Ionia Co., MI from 1891-1893 according to the historian for that school.
Walter was predeceased by his eldest sister, Emma Jane Hurlbut Perrin.
