Charles was born on the voyage of the bark Sirian Star, his father, George Ludlow Ritchie, Master, which departed London, England, on Nov. 15, 1877, and arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Jan. 7, 1878.
He was lost at sea on Monday, Dec. 6, 1897, at latitude 56.20 south, longitude 68.15 west. A desperate attempt to save him was made by the first mate (Charles' uncle)and four other crew members, but to no avail. He had certainly succumbed to hypothermia in those frigid waters within a matter of a few minutes. His body was not recovered. It was a bitter irony that Charles being born at sea should lose his life at sea. He is memorialized on the headstone of his parents in Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
